Killary Fjord is Ireland’s only Fjord and is situated next to the village of Leenane in Connemara, Co. Galway. It is just an 1hr 20 minutes from the airport so it’s a great day trip or overnight.
On this occasion, we decided to overnight in the Leenane Hotel which has amazing views of the fjord and the surrounding mountains.
With plenty of car park spaces and a lovely welcome it was time to visit the nearby village of Leenane. Truly it is something from a fairytale, the quaint shops and bars offer something for the local and the tourist. As it was a bright sunny day, one could enjoy a beverage or two at the outside sitting areas that most of the bars provide. You can look right across to the fjord and let your mind wonder about how the sheep don’t fall off the mountain. The village also has one or two restaurants so dining there in the village itself is recommended. We decided to relax in the spacious lounge in the hotel and then have dinner there. Luckily there was some vegetarian options on offer and the next day also found out that they did veggie sausages- this was a great plus.
The next morning, we decided to take on the boat trip before heading home. You can book online or pay at the kiosk next to the boat dock. The tour is only about a mile down the road from the hotel. Though you can save if you book online we decided to pay at the kiosk as we were still deciding on which tour time to take. There are up to 4 sailing a day in peak season. We decided to take the early 10.30 am trip as it was misty out and the air felt magical. Luckily, the four of us had the whole boat to ourselves. It was like we were having a private tour.
We did find out that a bus load of people due on that tour decided to go on the next one instead as weather would be nicer but we were happy to go ahead on this one. It was amazing experience and felt like our own boat at times. The staff were great too and the offerings on board were plentiful. We decided it had to be a Bailey’s Coffee!
The boat tour lasts about 90 mins and goes up to the mouth of the fjord and back around. On occasion we were prompted that dolphins could be about but we were unlucky not to see them about. I guess they had a sleep in! There is an intercom telling the story of the fjord and the surrounding area which is very insightful. This boat tour is a must if visiting the village. Price per Adult is €23.50 though it is €21 if booked online.
