A Development Fee of €10 is charged to all departing passengers from Ireland West Airport aged 12 years and over. This is a service charge which the Airport charges for the use of its facilities and as a contribution toward infrastructure developments, including passenger and airline services, ongoing maintenance and operation of this airport. The services include terminal facilities, safety and security, airline services such as air traffic control, navigational aids, runway systems, aircraft parking, and fire services.
All airports charge for their services. Most collect fees through the airlines which you see included as taxes, fees and charges at the time of booking and paying for your airline ticket. Our Development Fee forms part of our overall service charges, and we choose to charge this fee in an open and transparent manner. All airlines, tour operators and travel agents have been notified of our service charge and have been requested to make passengers aware of it before booking travel out of our Airport. We have advised them to publish it on all their relevant communications including their websites, with the option of linking to our website for the explanations in full.
The income we receive from airlines is not enough to cover the huge ongoing investment needed to provide services that meet airline and international regulatory standards. Passenger numbers have increased significantly over the last number of years and are expected to grow to close to one million by 2025. The Development Fee has provided critical funding support towards the completion of major infrastructural and terminal enhancement projects. Between 2015 and 2021 over €23m has been invested in upgrading & enhancing the airports facilities with further developments and infrastructural works planned over the next four
year period resulting in a total investment of over €50 million between 2015 and 2025, to ensure the airport continues to comply with international aviation safety and security regulations.
Most grant aid given by the Government needs to be matched by the Airport from its own resources. As a non-state airport, Ireland West Airport re-invests its available resources into the continued development of the airport for the benefit of the region and its customers.
The Development Fee payment point is located before entry to the security screening point. You can pay this fee by cash, debit or credit card before going through to the departure lounge.
The core policy is that all departing passengers aged 12 years and over, pay this charge.
The Development Fee has been a vital contributor to the successful completion and ongoing development of a number of major infrastructural projects at the airport over the past number of years without which the airport would not be in a position to offer the level of service currently in place, catering for over 700,000 passengers annually.
During the period 2022-2025, a number of major safety and security related projects are planned to commence which are forecasted to cost in the region of €27m plus over the next 3-4 year period. The Airport Development Fee will provide a critical funding support to facilitate the completion of these projects.
Whilst major safety and security related infrastructural projects are part supported by Government Funding – Grant aid provided for capital expenditure projects is required to be matched by the airport from its own resources and the Development Fee is critical to bridging this gap.
The completion of the above projects will ensure the airport complies with International Safety and security regulations and also ensures the airport continues to improve its facilities and customer experience for our passengers. As a non-state airport, Ireland West Airport re-invests its available resources into the continued development of the airport for the benefit of the region and its customers.
